Origin of Dragon Boat Festival

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday celebrated in China and other East Asian countries. It is observed on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, which usually falls in June on the Gregorian calendar. The festival has a history of over 2,000 years and is marked by various customs and activities.

The Dragon Boat Festival is primarily associated with the legend of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from ancient China. According to the legend, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River as an act of protest against political corruption. Local people who admired him raced out in boats to save him or retrieve his body. They beat drums and threw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves called zongzi into the water to prevent fish from eating his body.

To commemorate this event, dragon boat races are held on rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water during the festival. Dragon boats are long, narrow boats decorated like dragons, with a team of rowers and a drummer at the front setting the pace. These races attract a lot of attention and spectators, and they have become an important part of the festival’s festivities.

Dragon Boat Festival Activities

Another significant tradition during the Dragon Boat Festival is the consumption of zongzi. Zongzi are pyramid-shaped sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with various ingredients such as meats, beans, and nuts. They are steamed or boiled and eaten as a special delicacy during the festival.

Apart from dragon boat races and zongzi, there are other customs associated with the festival. People may hang up pouches of herbs called “aromatic sachets” to ward off evil spirits, wear colorful silk threads to protect against evil, and display images of dragons and other auspicious symbols. Some regions also have the custom of wearing a colorful silk thread around the wrist called a “thread of love” to bring good luck and protection.

In recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has gained popularity worldwide, and dragon boat races are organized in various countries as a competitive sport and a way to promote cultural exchange. The festival itself continues to be celebrated in China and among Chinese communities around the world, providing an opportunity to honor traditions, enjoy time with family, and celebrate the spirit of unity and courage.
